Mind-mapping

I’ve been reading a book on mind-mapping, “The Mind Map Book” by Tony and Barry Buzan. I’m not sure what to think of it. I haven’t tried doing a mind map yet, so I can’t say whether it works. The book makes some astounding claims about how it can improve memory retention, organization, and creativity, all things important to me. The positivity of the whole thing reminds me, although there is no other reason why it should, of other systems that ended up evolving in to sects and cults (Transcendental Meditation, other new-age stuff), so I retain a measure of suspicion about the whole thing. Have any of you experience with mind-mapping?

Using this method, I’m going to try to map the novel I wrote, in the hopes that it will kick-start the rewriting process, which is currently giving me big problems.

And, moreover, bloggies schmoggies.

  1. well at least some of our favorites made it: acerbia, how to learn… & riley dog…

Yes, I’m really happy about them. But something about the idea of awards for blogging strikes me as pointless. Isn’t the whole idea that a blog is unique? Although I’ll admit I got excited about it last year when FL was nominated.

  3. Well, you get my “Not a 2003 Bloggie Award for the most unique blog” anyway. And yes, we’re all individuals!

Thanks, Joeri, and you get mine. But seriously, awards really don’t interest me. I do this for the good of the human race, and posterity.

  5. You’re too modest ;)

  6. I think I used to see this Tony Buzan guy (white hair, sports jacket) on the BBC during Open University broadcasts at night back when we used to have a TV and I couldn’t sleep. But that’s all I remember about him. If I had bought his book, maybe I’d be able to remember more.

And yes, Joeri, it would be a fine thing if Riley Dog won something.

  7. I do this to attract the babes.

Yes, the babe angle is not to be underrated. And, yes, Riley Dog has my votes.

And Mr. Buzan does strike me as a candidate for the Open University shows. I guess I’ll just have to try mind mapping myself, then.

I took a month off between draft 1 (+ a few small changes) and this rewrite, and am having a hell of a time getting restarted.
