A play in one act

Cast: Miguel, “Despair” (played by Michael J. Pollard), Alpha.

Despair: [bouncing optimistically on bed] “Alarm’s going to go off in like half an hour, might as well get up. No chance of falling back to sleep anyway. Don’t want to be late for root canal!”
Miguel: “Go away.”
Despair: “Plus, it’s Monday, so traffic’s going to suck. And we don’t want to be late for our dead-end clerical job, do we?”
Miguel: “Mmm, coffee.”
Despair: “Ha. Published anything lately? Mr. Writer? Give up, man.”
Miguel: “Mmm, bread.”
Despair: “Useless. Wasn’t that a nice little Glock we saw at the gun shop way back when? I haven’t forgotten it, and neither have you. One round in the temple, you wouldn’t feel a thing. Think about it.”
Alpha: “Morning honey. Have you seen, more blossoms have opened on the apple tree. And the little cherry tree’s blooming too.”
Miguel: “Yes, they’re beautiful.”
Despair: [fading] “See ya round, pal.”
