Teachers, nurses, medics, firemen and cops should all be paid more. We all should, of course, except maybe people like real estate developers and stock brokers and attorneys, although I have recently met some brilliant and funny lawyers who surprised me by being interesting and simply very good people. So attorneys shall be judged on a case-by-case basis, while stock brokers are still scheduled to be set out on a large iceberg and real estate developers, well, I won’t go into that.
But, in my worthless opinion, graphic designers are the coolest of the cool, on the whole. At least if they are good. There are, of course, wretched exceptions to any rule, like for instance an old roommate who, last I heard, broke out of a boring graphic design existence designing coupons for a retail chain and now designs signs for a hospital. Otherwise, though, graphic designers are cool.
That would actually be what I would study if I were a young guy again. I used to think being a carpenter would be the coolest job, because I love the smell of cut lumber and I love hammering nails and building things. But I have an unfortunate tendency to maim myself with power tools.
Who do you think is cool?
I always wanted to do something outdoors, I think that would be cool. A job where I can have an abundance of fresh air all the time.
I also think it would be cool to be a super spy.
Super-spy gets a vote from me too, it just that the killing part (and especially when “they” are doing the killing (i.e. killing _me_)) doesn
spy, pool cleaner or one of those spca cops on ‘animal precinct’
Drummers are my favorite musicians; as people (as rockstars, anyway) they tend to have better than average integrity. I wanted to be a drummer when I was young, but I was discouraged – something about being too masculine…
Film directors are really cool. That’s what I want to be when I grow up.
If I had it to do over, I would try very hard to convince myself that film school was not just a frivolous indulgence, but a good means for channeling my world-changing tendencies. And that one such degree would make me more employable than two in Anthropology. ;)
Midwives do it for me! A good midwife is worth her weight in gold. If I had my time again, that’s what I’d do.
i want to be one of those people who types the closed captions in. i would be perfect at it. how come you never see job ads for that kind of a thing?
Coincidentally, I know a woman here in Austria who does it for the national TV station. I’ll ask her how she found the job (which she seems to like).
I think she answered an ad…
When I was younger I wanted to be an architect – architects are cool. My father was an architect, and I loved the idea of creating something that was so permanent, useful and artistic all at the same time. But I didn’t like math so I figured I couldn’t handle it.
The road not taken.
Well, not to ring my bell…but teachers are kick ass. Well, let me rephrase that…teachers who LIKE kids and who want to make learning fun plus want to help guide young souls are kick ass. We really should be paid more so that the actual field of teaching is thought to be an important one..not just one for stupid jocks who know how to coach football.
