The best theoretical punishment I ever heard of was on The West Wing, and it was that every day the murderer would be forced to watch all the home movies of every person that he/she had killed, and that every evening a member of that person’s family would be allowed to punch the murderer in the face. The punching part would I guess cross the line of “torture”, but hours of home videos?
Soooo much better than hanging.
