Favorites

Famous designer and illustrator Bran has been helping me with the redesign here. Thanks, Bran. There have been many changes to improve your reading experience, you may have noticed some of the more profound ones, which I hope were not too jarring or disconcerting, such as moving the “about” information to the top of the sidebar.

All that’s left, once the archives finally finish rebuilding, will be to add a list of favorite posts, which might help the casual visitor go straight to some of the more attractive stuff here rather than wade through a lot of… you know, I love all of my children equally, but some people coming here for the first time might think, gosh, he writes about fish a lot.

Two or three of you are new readers, I think, and the other two have been reading me for a longer time. I’d like to ask you a favor: in the comments here, or in an email, please let me know if any of the content here has stuck in your mind (sorry!) or if there is anything here you have especially liked or would recommend, or if you have any, you know, favorites.

Thanks in advance. The email account I check most often is metamorphosist at gmail dot com.

  1. i want you to write a whole book with each chapter from the point of view of a different animal. or, no, what i meant to say was: i like it when you post from the point of view of the cello or the turtle or something equally odd. they’re probably not my favorites, but they’re up there. i like the deer posts. i like the ones where you can feel yourself on the verge of happiness.

Congrats to the spiffy new look.

Favorites? Hmmm, I don’t actually know. I tend to like the “nothing particular happened” posts. And no, I can’t really define it better. Oh and Gamma. Everything with Gamma in it is great. ;)

  3. but you really have been writing about fish a lot!

    nice new look.

  4. oh, i forgot to tell you i added you to my links, but too late for you to back out now, i’m afraid …

i like it here. it’s restful.

    cheers :)

Things that have stuck? Gamma’s party, the one that left the house looking like fairies had gone to war, leaving sparkly stuff everywhere. Anything about deer. Family related stuff.

    Lots of things, really.

    Everything, actually.

I guess it’s in the nature of the form that the new entries tend to dislodge the old ones from your head. Like I was thinking, what was that one from a while ago that described a whole morning in one long sentence and then ended really neatly, then I realised that was “Intention” from only a couple of weeks ago.

    Also:
    – “How to play the cello”
    – Dick Cheney and his collection of poo
    – the one where i think you were visiting your dad in hospital, and about the things you wanted to ask him, whether he minded that neither of you had “ever amounted to anything”. I think it was so touching because it’s one of those basic father/son things.

  7. Not that tim, another Tim

Mig, all your stuff is great. I especially like a post from a while back where you went to a ball with Alpha. I feel very self concious in crowds as well.

As much as we all like you, the real star of the metamorphosis show is Gamma. Anything with Gamma is funny and we all love her.

  8. the other Tim again

Oh, and the Chaos calculator post and anything from back in the “raising hell” period.

  9. The Mormon-story

  10. R.

Yes Gamma, but also Beta going to France, Alpha calling you for Krippen stuff, grunion plumbing problems (particularly because I’m from California…where I have parents in their 80’s, so I had to close the window when you talked about your dad…don’t know what happened. Always go to How to learn Swedish to open your page, another superstition).

  11. Every story where I am mentioned, of course.

  12. The one about how to apply floor wax with a turtle but that was really allegory for how the turtle spread its shit around. That was great, much better than I just made it sound. You should delete this comment so I don’t ruin it for anyone.

And the one about the zombies, and not relaxing just in case thereof, from around a year ago. These are both old, old posts, but ones that stick in my head.

  13. Oh, and the new design is awesome.

  14. I guess I’m one of the new regulars.

I don’t think any post in particular has stuck in my mind, but fragments of a lot have. What I like about you blog is not certain topics, but rather your style of writing, really, and perhaps that it tends to be not about things or events, but about your experience of them. Basically, I like your tone, you style, your pace.

Oh, and in my native language (Danish) “mig” is the word for “me”, which inevitably adds a somewhat existentialist angle :-)

  16. I like it when you write “feh” and “eh”. One is so forcefully opinionated and and one so completely laden with ennui.

  17. Anything with cellos in it, or glitter, or tender self-doubt.

  18. cj

Anything with turtles, glitter, the Doblo, the one about your mirror breaking secondary to hairdryer mishap, oh and anytime you elude to jumping your wife after going to a ball – and the description of you intermingling at the ball before you go home… and in-law negotiations. The horror stories you tell children. Krill.
