Shipment

On the news this morning, they said 25,000 body bags were being shipped to the site of the hurricane Katrina damage. “So body bags they can organize,” my daughter said.

  1. It’s good to see that you’ve taught your daughter well.

Yeah, body bags are always easier, cause no one wants credit for that.

The general consensus here is that the debacle was a combination of natural and unexpected mechanical failure events (HUGE storm surge after the hurrican already passed / levees failing / pumps failing), and jockeying for credit between the local, state, and federal authorities.

The mayor waited too long to declare evacuation, and didn’t make allowances for public transport for those unable to get out. The governor waitied to long to activate the National Guard, and waited too long to send them in. Both the city and the state emergency management plans were inadequate to the scope of the emergency, and were poorly implemented. And when the Feds got involved, it became a pissing contest while people roasted, starved and dehydrated to death.

I would say that there will be repercussions from this debacle, but I really doubt it. There is no accountability in government anymore, at least not here.

Do yourself a favor – stay over there. You really don’t want to be back here anymore.

My other one, the little one, at breakfast yesterday asked, “why are people fucked if they are poor and black, daddy?” I just smiled sadly and said, “no, honey, they’re fucked if they’re poor, and they’re fucked if they’re black. If they’re poor and black, they’re really fucked.”

  4. As someone who was sitting where I’m sitting now in Manhattan nearly four years ago, I hope you’ll believe me, that the fallout from Katrina is much worse, and that it keeps getting worse. I don’t mean the new developments, such as they are. Just the miasma of shame and dread cast up by this catastrophe.

Bodybags are easy, ’cause bodybags don’t need food, water, healthcare or jobs.

    Or a stars-and-stripes motif.
