Gamma’s latest illness

If something is going around, Gamma usually catches it. In the long run this is having a positive training effect on her immune system, I’m sure. Currently it appears to be borreliose (German name) which I guess is called Lymes disease in English, a bacterial (spirochetes) infection typically transmitted by ticks, and, now by our new-improved mosquitos. Things will likely go well, it can be treated with antibiotics, but my fear-the-worst mindset has me very worried, because it can, if not caught in time, move into the joints, or brain, where it is harder to fight and can, in a bad case, cause encephalitis. And now I just got off the phone with Alpha, who says they have to go into the hospital for a blood test because her fever hasn’t gone down. If the blood test comes back somehow, bad in some way, she may have to have a spinal fluid test, which is no fun. A pediatrician friend of ours is even going into the hospital today to check on the test, although he is on vacation right now, nice guy. So anyway, I won’t be writing anything funny today, nor will I be posting any 911-related rants. Maybe tomorrow.

i’d rather freak out over nothing than be hopeful and jinx it, you know? i just called alpha, they’re at the hospital, in a room, waiting for the results of the blood test. gamma is feeling fine, eating her weight in hospital food. her neck is not stiff, meaning it’s probably not encephalitis etc.

funny thing, we’ve all been sick so often in recent years that most of our friends are doctors and nurses. we’re on the familiar “du” basis with half the hospital staff, rather than the formal “Sie”. this gets you better service in austria, when people think you’re buddies with the doctors. they may or may not spend the night in hospital. if they do, i’ll smuggle a bottle of wine in to alpha.

i can’t remember if i posted this already; last winter we were in a restaurant with a friend and her swiss friend, both hospital pharmacists. we were talking about stuff, and the swiss person asked us what we did in the health field, i guess because we seemed so knowledgeable. “we’re patients,” we said.

Sorry to hear that Gamma is ill again – hope she will soon be fit & well! Like you, I would rather face up to worries early on, then breathe a huge sigh of relief when the worrying turns out to be needless.

    Take care of each other.

  8. miguel

thanks everyone. no, the embassy of the republic of oingo-boingo, where i work, is open for business as usual. not sure about the american embassy.

  9. when I was little, spraypainted on a brick wall near the canal by my house, was a big tag proclaiming “oingo boingo!”

I had no idea it was a band until years later. heh

  10. miguel

yes, well, we like people to know that it was a country first, band second. part of my job is making sure people realize that.

I’m sorry Gamma’s ill. Best wishes.

I hope that gamma is all right. I didn’t know that Lymes could be transmitted by mosquitos. I have a three year old that was eaten up the other day and I’ll be watching her carefully.
