Lemony Snicket

My sister sent me a couple more dismal books about the Baudelaire orphans by Lemony Snicket for Christmas. If I read too many of them at a sitting, they start getting a little too campy for me, but I’ve been enjoying these this time. I’ve tried to get my oldest daughter to read them, but she refuses because they are dismal and awful.

  1. I’ve read all those books. They are best read in small doses. Highly entertaining in a really sick sort of way.

they look quite addictive — & the website is absolutely funny as hell!

  3. I got the series for Christmas, too, and read the first two in consecutive sittings, but had to stop halfway through the third because it was just too upsetting. Small doses, hm, must remember that. It’s amazing how much you want the kids to vanquish the villain after a while – shifting that one piece of the formula is effective. I can’t read them before bedtime.
I can read Neil Gaiman’s Neverwhere, but not Lemony Snicket. Sheesh, I’m suggestible.

Neverwhere really makes me want to ride the Tube.

To those of you who think that last comment sounds really bad, I’d just like to point out that the subway in London is known locally as “The Tube”.

  6. Ahhhh. Small doses. That explains why I loved the first one, liked the second, found the third rather irritating…
Need to slow down the dosage. Thanks!

  7. Those books are a great read, granted though only in small doses. The synopsis at the back of the book drew me too them, morbid as it was, I thought it was just really well done.
