I found this in my referrers and was all set to get all “what’s up with this xml syndication thing anyway” but then I noticed I supply an xml syndication link down at the bottom of my right column there.
What is xml syndication, though, and what is the point of it? What is the advantage for me?
Also, while we’re on the topic of syndication, I just wanted to say to the person with the blogspot blog who’s hotlinking a strip of Bug comics without informing me, or asking permission, or giving me credit, and who does unfortunately not have any contact information on their blog (that I can find) and no comments: That is bad manners. I dig it when people post the Bug on their sites, don’t misunderstand me. But hotlinking is, if you want to get anal retentive about it, theft of bandwidth; and posting content without giving credit is copyright violation.
Good night.
[Note: Okay, I've gone and changed the images on her site. This is a pain, because when I do that I have to re-name the original images, and change the links in the original post, and boo-hoo-hoo...]
xml syndication is good for feed readers. people who read literally hundreds of weblogs per day can add your feed to the list and read all new posts in one location versus bloghopping all day.
i prefer bloghopping because the whole point of reading weblogs is to slack off at work, and why bother to slack efficiently, really?
That is a huge no-no. She’s posting your strips as if she created them herself! Seems like you should be able to get her blogspot account removed. Seriously.
stealing bread or even t.v.’s, i can understand, but one who steals another person’s creative work has no soul and no sense of self.
I’m assuming she ? is not intentionally being rude/stealing. One of my first weblogs was at blogspot and I did hotlink the occasional image, simply because some people using it don’t have any sort of hosting. Okay.
And the Bug is sort of set up so people can syndicate it, i.e. post strips they like to their own weblogs, but so I can keep track of my stuff I do ask them to inform me, and to make it clear who draws/etc the strip I also ask that they link the Bug; she? didn’t do either. I would normally send her? a polite email reminding her of this stuff, but was unable to find any contact info on her? site, so I posted this in the hopes that she would see it and make the changes. We’ll see. I’d hate to contact Blogspot and get her account pulled, and if this is a one-time thing don’t think I’ll bother.
Oh ho, let me just point out to you that you have the upper hand here. Since she is actually linking to your site instead of making her own copies, you can easily just change your own site so that ANYTHING YOU WANT appears on HER page.
Without being able to speak Dutch (or whatever that is), it’s hard to get enough context to judge what sort of images would be the most dastardly. But I’m sure you can come up with something.
It’s kind of funny that someone went to the trouble of setting up a feed for you on LJ (if you’re not familiar, it’s so, if you have an LJ account, you can add the feed subscription to your friends list so that all the feed posts appear intermingled with your friends’ posts all on one big friends page e.g. http://www.livejournal.com/~gwenzilla/friends ; more confusing explanation of sorts here: http://www.livejournal.com/~gwenzilla/37840.html ) yet there are no subscribers (that means you’re not appearing on anyone’s friends page). I would add your feed to my LJ friends but I already subscribe elsewhere and it seems like overkill.
i was just going to say, if it’s a livejournal, she has gone through some amount of trouble!
no email, no comments? weird.
You’re a much nicer person than I. In fact, you were so polite about the whole thing she’s probably overcome with guilt by now.
Someone from a Kurt Cobain message board hotlinked to one of my images. I immediately replaced it with a picture of Courtney Love.
Oooh, harsh, dude.
Eh, the nastiest thing I’ve done to a hotlinker (so far) was substitute a picture of D*ck Ch*ney for a pic of J*hnny D*pp several fansites were linking.
Reading her posts , I think that she is simply very young ( old enough to go out on a weekend night, young enough that she still lives at home) and new to blogging in general. In fact, looking over it again, she is still in school.
While hot linking is annoying, she seems un-schooled in the manners of the web, not intentionally stealing your content.
Well , that’s my read.
Mine too.
After being a member of a board that absolutely *creamed* the newbies that did things like that, without knowing, and seeing the fallout that invariably led to the new person being disparaged and banned from somewhere they obviously wanted to be, I applaud you for being more…erm…levelheaded and nice about it.
Although I cannot read her site, I’m sure she will contact you. Or just be really embarrassed, which may prompt her to learn but not feel that she’s been beaten over the head with her mistake.
