A scholar of English was sent to prison (for reasons irrelevant to the anecdote). A blockmate informed him that if he were to make amorous advances at the warden’s wife, he had a good chance of being set free. The scholar scoffed, “It’s improper to end a sentence with a proposition.”

Whoa – I had to memorize the entire list of prepositions in alphabetical order when I was in Catholic school in 4th grade. This just gave me a flashback.

One of my mother’s obscure talents is her ability to recite all the prepositions in one unbroken stream. It’s quite amazing actually.

I lately lost a preposition:
It hid, I thought, beneath my chair.
And angrily I cried: “Perdition!
Up from out of in under there!”

Correctness is my vade mecum,
And straggling phrases I abhor;
And yet I wondered: “What should he come
Up from out of in under for?”
