Hey, Thanks! I needed that. Sad thing is, only a couple of the five or so I needed will stick.

I feel like someone sent me anonymous email telling me that my breath stinks or something. It doesn't. My grammar does.

totally, francis. i remember being at some ceremony where friedensreich hundertwasser was awarded some austrian medal of honor and going on pompously about how good things were "in grandmother's day" and a fellow behind me was muttering a litany of things like, "yeah, right, open sewers, no antibiotics, high infant mortality rates...".

i also remember stories my father told me about going to school as a boy in the depression in a catholic school in chicago (cruel nuns, good education) and in SW Washington state (no nuns, evil Finn bullies beating up little Irish kids, poor education).

i just cringe at calling the present a golden age. i mean, in general maybe, but right now? although, have our politicians ever been any different? you might be right.

Simple enough rules.

I seem to be having a somewhat similar conversation over at She Speaks Good English with the artist formerly known as, well, she doesn't want people to use the name, so we'll just leave it at Incognita.

Anyway, while I am a terrible school marm when it comes to my own grammar, and I was quite amused by the writer, part of me hates the supercilious attitude. And, I take issue with the statement that educational standards are whithering. They were never, ever good when it came to standards for the masses. I am extremely skeptical when someone refers, even obliquely, to some previous time that represented a golden age when schools were better, children knew how to mind their manners and movie stars had real glamor. The golden age, almost always, is now, whenever now happens to be. People who believe in a past golden age are just being sentimental.

Okay, I feel much better, I'm ready to get off my soapbox now. Sorry for any inconvenience I may have caused.
