I think most people find religion, at least in the States, so attractive, not for the ceremony, but for the communal factor.

Personally, I have a problem with hive mentality and inability to think critically.

In HS, I was friends with this Hungarian girl, who was an Apostle Christian of the Nazarene. She couldn't wear makeup, jewelry, or pants, and her hair had to be pulled up and covered. I once asked her if she ever questioned what she taught in church. She looked petrified, and she told me that she just couldn't let herself think that way.

I have no problem with organizing or communal efforts in general. I have a problem with religion, but it's live and let live, you know?

Yet, Europe claims to be 40% atheist, and it's managed to become environmentally conscious and humanist, much more so than the USA. Tells you something, I think.

I'm not an atheist, although organized religion hasn't convinced me yet. My biggest problem is with organization, I think, and not religion. I enjoy mystical revelations and epiphanies in the most interesting places.

If you look up the song on the Web, there's no mention of her. Only of Irving Berlin. But my family is quite adament that she did indeed write the original version (which was actually changed later).

I think very similarly to you, actually. I'm an atheist.
