I’d recommend Word Press before paying for MT. I’m no expert in either, but I like Word Press much more.

When I had MT, I spent a lot of time fiddling with this template and that template and blah, but Word Press is basically ONE template (for the blog portion) and has the ability for plugins to install very easily and dynamically. Also, depending on how much traffic you get, there’s no “rebuild” required. This is great for me, because my site is pretty low traffic. You’d have to have a HUGE number of hits to NOT benefit from this (due to the dynamic nature of PHP). Geek speak, but the short and figurative of it is that you don’t have to worry about your pages getting effed up during a rebuild because ALL pages are instantly updated.

Summary: if your going to fiddle with it, just get Word Press. If you’re not, leave it alone. The only worry to that is that the older versions of MT will not be supported (not that Word Press is), and they may end up containing bugs that could take down your site and will not be fixed.

Also, for Geek Cred, Word Press is open source. MT is proprietary. That seems to matter a bit more over here in Austria.

I’m pretty happy with Expression Engine by PMachine. Of course, I got the thing for free when they were trying to lure MT users away. Lucky me.

Quick fix for the missing buttons:

It’s an extension for FireFox that lets you open Internet Explorer in an FF tab.
Pretty neat.

The italic, bold, underline and URL buttons are only visible with Internet Explorer, so if you switched to Firefox at some point, that would explain it.

i will probably stick with my current version of MT, although i’d like to fix whatever bug resulted in the disappearance of the buttons that insert links and format text (italic, bold, underline). they’re just not there anymore, and haven’t been for quite a while in fact.

mostly, i’m looking for free design tips…

I’m still running on MT 2.661 without any complaints. But then I’m way to lazy to really want to migrate everything to some kind of other software, especially as I don’t seem to need any of the features that the other products have.

If you want the MT 2.63->2.661 upgrade package, contact me. It has no additional features, but a few handy bug fixes.

No. I upgraded to MT 3.whatever and I’m not all that impressed. The older version was just fine. I have played with WordPress, Drupal, Expression Engine, and one or two others, and none of them are any better.
