The general consensus here is that the debacle was a combination of natural and unexpected mechanical failure events (HUGE storm surge after the hurrican already passed / levees failing / pumps failing), and jockeying for credit between the local, state, and federal authorities.

The mayor waited too long to declare evacuation, and didn’t make allowances for public transport for those unable to get out. The governor waitied to long to activate the National Guard, and waited too long to send them in. Both the city and the state emergency management plans were inadequate to the scope of the emergency, and were poorly implemented. And when the Feds got involved, it became a pissing contest while people roasted, starved and dehydrated to death.

I would say that there will be repercussions from this debacle, but I really doubt it. There is no accountability in government anymore, at least not here.

Do yourself a favor – stay over there. You really don’t want to be back here anymore.
