Ahem. I am famous among my friends for despising the Metropolitan Opera. But that's only because - well never mind. It does indeed do great stuff, by most accounts, and the sight of the chandeliers being retracted into the ceiling before the opera begins has to be one of the greatest pieces of show business anywhere.

And what's more, our opera's orchestra is the equal of the Vienna Philharmonic (which plays for the opera). There's no harder ticket to get than to the MET Orchestra's Carnegie Hall appearances in winter and spring.

It is true, I admit, that, as Susan Sontag put it (and I'm going to get this wrong), Manhattan is an island tied up at the docks of the United States.

An evening at Yankee Stadium, needless to say, needs no flogging.

Well said, Mig. Baseball really is one of the great experiences (live. in a stadium. with beer. and kids. and hot dogs). In fact, all other elements being equal (as in, trip to Vienna would not play in to my decision), I 'd probably rather sit at a comfortable temperature day game drinking beer than in my usual "standing room" seats in the State Opera with no beer.

baseball is the only sport i understand anything basic about, although i don't follow it till the end and only if the (hated) yankees are involved.
my grandpa used to take me to yankee stadium when i was a little girl. returning there last year was amazing. i like being in a baseball stadium with happy new yorkers. happy new yorkers love so much.

also, i learned that day that if the yankees lose, they play the liza minnelli version of "new york, new york" over the sound system. if they win, however, they play the frank sinatra version. i have no idea why. well, maybe i have an idea.

...and it aint over till the fat lady sings.

I'm not a big fan or anything, but baseball is the only sport I rather like, especially live. It's also the only one that I vaguely understand. Other than soccer, I sort of understand soccer, too.
