I like to Google random phrases from “meth epidemic” pieces and see how many local papers flaunt the same article as locally relevant. My favorite was the “meth mouth” phenomenon, as described by a medical expert who was unfamiliar with human dentition. That guy talked to reporters from Beaver Lick to Swollen Knob. It kind of smacks of the Coke vs. Pepsi war in Central and South America, as reportedly meth makes you crave Mountain Dew which makes you have to pee so often you neglect your children, or something.

Sorry we missed you, and that you missed Voodoo Doughnut. Clearly we’re not meant to see each other on this continent, or at least this coast. We kind of knew that, though, and had a blast driving up and back. Niener.

I agree, Scott. I like Portland a lot too; I can see where my post could be misconstrued… Some of those adjectives I use are actually the reasons I like the town. I like Seattle too, but not as much since it got rich and important. Portland still has a smaller feel, but there seems to be a rising tide of self-importance there too. But yeah, totally.

I’ve stayed at the Mallory. I liked it.

I like Portland, too. Those adjectives you give are accurate, but there exist many positive ones, too.

One thing I think Portland suffers from is “little man’s syndrome”. This was pointed out to me by my good friend, who owns a cafe there. What I mean by this is that everywhere you go, you are alerted to the second-rateness in a positive way:

“this is the second-largest cast iron statue in the world”.

“This is the largest park inside any city’s limits” (even though it’s just a big-ass piece of forest hanging out at the edge of the town

“Portland is the second-largest city on a North-flowing river”

It’s always some shit like that.

But I like Portland. A lot.

now let’s talk about how hot ronnie is, shall we? and the weather, the weather is hot, too. we can talk about that. also i forgive you for The Note because i was too befuddled by all lines everywhere to even go INTO powell’s.

also i’m leaving in a couple days so if there’s some emergency thing you want that one can only get here like maybe a duck call muffler you should let me know.

Flying home from Romania this summer I gladly gave up my middle seat to a kid so he could sit by his mother. Then I gave up that middle seat so someone else could be with a family member, and ended up scoring a window seat–and a rather befuddled flight attendant. Courtesy pays off!

I’m all too familiar with the Portland airport- never have I waited so long to get through security than at that hellhole. I stood in a line once that…..well, nevermind. My sympathies.

Oregon is a strange place. One can do almost anything there, with complete state absolution. Evidently, however, that doesn’t include meth….
