Since I missed actually singing Happy Birthday (and who wrote that thing, anyway? Could they have picked a less pleasantly-singable assemblage of notes? I suppose they could have, if they had also written the Star Spangled Banner.), I am sending a proxy. It should be there today or tomorrow. And is probably best enjoyed with a tiara.

jilbur: jellyfish can be effective negotiators, but have a limited spectrum.
Brian: i’m getting a carbon-fiber bow (i think) instead. i haven’t ordered it yet. I can’t afford the CF cello at the moment, and the prospect of importing it and possibly paying import taxes on top of the price daunted me, so i got a wooden one made in germany instead. i still want to give the cf a try.
gordon: thank you. i wore gamma’s tiara in your honor as i sat in my library, drinking absinthe.
RJ: the theme to “jaws”.
kay: yes, it’s a may 10 thing. may 1 is the best day to have a birthday in austria, because it’s always a holiday and the weather is always nice on that day – or at least has been for the past 8 years, when i started paying attention. but may 10 is the best day, world wide, for a birthday, judging from the people born on that day (fred astaire (from austria btw). bono. sid vicious.)

one year I made Schwarzwaldkirschtorte for my guy’s birthday. it was very pretty, and it tasted great, but preparation of the gelatin-reinforced Schlag put me off the use of gelatin in cooking *forever.* shudder
